dash out, suggestions
Got the drivers side dash out in order to put in new dash harness. Any suggestions on things I should do while in this area?

Yes replace all the bulbs ( long life ) and test them to make sure everything lights up before re-installing

You can lube the speedo cable with the dash in but its a lot easier with the dash out. Does a 69 have an electric or mechanical tach. If its mechanical I would lube its cable too.
I would also just look around, I found a missing grommet when my dash was out.
Good luck.

Is the light switch working properly (dimmer, etc.)? How about the wiper door? If the light switch is working OK, I wouldn't change it out...the new ones aren't made very well. The wiper door solenoid/switch is mounted to the back of the tach. Now's the time to fix it if necessary. (It is merely an electrically operated vacuum switch. It should block vacuum when voltage is at 0; it should pass vacuum when voltage is at 12 vdc. Test it to see if you need a new one. The open port on the end is a 'vent' and should have a foam cube on it to keep dust out.) Don't forget the bulbs in the turn signal arrows and the "BRIGHT" indicator.

now is a perfect time to add dynomat or Refectix insulation. 69VETT

help
71vette and 69vett,
Thanks for the advice. I'm going to use the graphite lube on the cables. I have the steering column out, so how can I test all the lights etc without being hooked up to the steering column harness? Also, aren't all the bulbs the same size? How do I test the solenoid? I noticed that it doesn't have the dust foam on the end and Wilcox said it didn't matter. Regarding the reflectix, I would highly rec that you put some sort of rubber between reflectix and wiring as it almost caused a fire in mine sue to a short.

long life bulb
Motorhead,
whats a long life bulb? Is this different from just getting new replacements for the current bulbs or a special bulb?
Thanks,
andy

Reflectix is no different than a normal metal bodied car,
you just need to make sure your wiring is solid, and not frayed and flopping around, but thanks for the advice anyway ! 69VETT
Use a small 12 power supply or battery with a fuse,
to test your individual circuits, as you are putting things together.

testing parts
69vett,
how would I test each circuit witha 12v battery. I have one of those portable booster batteries I could use. I'm just confused as to how without cutting wires. Is this correct: take say some 14ga wire and attach to the ground on my protable and one side of the fuse for the instrument cluster and use another wire from the positive side of the booster to the other side of the fuse for the instrument cluster with a fuse installed?
Thanks and forgive my ignorance,
andy

All you need to do to check the wiper solenoid/switch is to disconnect the electrical connector from the device, hook 12 vdc to the electrical terminals (positive side to the 'terminal' with the yellow connector) and then blow (or suck) through one of the hose fittings. If it passes air OK, then remove the 12vdc supply lines and try to blow/suck through it again. It should be completely sealed off. If the switch doesn't function properly, you can remove it from the tach and try to clean it out [it might have some dirt in the valve area]. Don't use any volatile cleaners...maybe some alcohol to flush it out. Let dry and try it again. Replace it if you are in doubt; ZIP Products [and others] sell replacements.

Be careful lubing the speedo and tach cables. In a recent thread it was mentioned that the way the internal cable is wound, during operation the lube will work up toward the speedo/tach and ruin them.
