1968 vette : I tried to start yesterday and battery was dead I got a new battery and seemed to cure the problem. I went out this morning to start it and nothing not a click anything, then I started to get smoke from the dash region I beleive. Not a heavy billowing smoke just a quick smoke and gone. It smelt like it might have been electrical. I have started removing the dash to see if I can find the culperat, Anyone have an idea of what the problem might be?
alrighty, I pulled the ignition switch and found that the wire that runs to the solenoid (purpe wire) looks like it grounded out some where some how and has bare wires showing. Do i need to replace the solenoid after checking the wire?
I looked around some more at the wiring and really couldn't find anything melted, the only thing I found was the one wire off of the ignition switch and its not burnt just the plastic has come back but no burn marks on it.
My mechanic came over and told me that the reason for the smoke was my engine wasn't grounded and the ignition was looking for ground. He grounded the motor to the frame and car starts better now than it ever did. Also found out my alternator was only putting out 12.5 volts so got a new one. This should cut down on the taxing of the engine and allow for more power and less heat.
