My existing speakers are old and need replacing. I need advise on decent (not over-the-hill expensive) replacements. 6 x 9's (rear) and round kick panel speakers in front (not sure what size fits - I need to measure). I believe they are 6.5". Any suggestions I can purchase from Best Buy or other suppliers would be appreciated.
I have Boston Acoustics speaker in my '69's kick panels and am very happy with them...no distortion at higher volumes. I tried Sony speakers first and they sucked...distorted at anything beyond lower volume levels.
My choice was Polk DB651s, 6 1/2" with shallow magnet. There is not a lot of room in that area. In the upper dash I have 4 x 6" Pioneers. My head unit is four channel: 50W x 4. IPod input, no cassette, no CD.
In this pic you can see the black reinforcement ring that secures the speakers to the panel. Along the lines of what Ganey mentioned.
Overall look.
This gives me a little ooom-pah-pah in the back. Nice 8" unit with integrated amp. Nice clean install.
I threw on some BA's a while back and the radio won't support them. There's a difference in Ohms between stock and aftermarket ones. I just get big block engine noise and static.

I run the Polk DB651S in my kick panels in my big block and don't have any engine noise or static. The head unit is a Jensen 4 channel, 50 wpc.
Do you have the braided plug wires and the ignition shielding?
I did have alternator whine so I added a filter at the alternator battery connector.
I'm planning on using some "bookshelf" speakers for my wife's 70 LT-1 mounted in far back where Astro Ventallation vents are under rear deck. Since the Vette has a radio delete plate, I will run the Ipod jack up center console from rear to ashtray area and locate it under the ashtry area, with the amp below the center storage compartment. I always had problems with ignition noise on kick panel/dash mounted speakers on Corvettes so now I figure a Ipod adapter going to a hidden amp and speakers at the rear of the car will solve all my noise problems, but, I'll be the first to admit, I am no audiophile
