For those who have read my thread Transmission troubles, here is an update. I jacked up the vehicle to check for leaks. I looked at the pan gasket, seals, and lines (no leaks present) I then looked toward the rear of the transmission and noticed the bullet shaped housing the holds the speedometer cable had separated from the transmission body. That would explain why I wasn't seeing any fluid on the dipstick. I pushed the housing back into the hole and filled the vehicle with three quarts of transmission fluid. I then put it in gear and it shifted in all of it's ranges. However since I have drove several miles with the transmission slipping I think I have burned the clutch plates and the vehicle will no longer shift if I drive it anywhere.
Get a new retainer and bolt. Put a new o-ring on the bullet and put it all back together. Fill it up and go around the block then check the fluid again. If the color changes from out of the bottle red to really dark red it's probably done. Or will be soon. On the other side, it might run for a long time. You just can't ever tell without a full teardown and autopsy.
I don't recall seeing a retainer, However there must be something that holds the speedo gear sleeve to the transmission body. I do remember seeing a small bolt right beside the top of the sleeve where you screw the speedo cable to the top of the gear sleeve. Could you please describe. I will go under the car to look at it.
Sure. A 350 with the small diameter bullet (7/8"?) has a slot in the side of it. Into that slot fits a little tab retainer that has the bolt thru it. It swings into the slot, bolt gets tightend and locks the bullet into the trans. There is naother style for a large diamet speedo gear adapter (1-1/2?) that looks like a fork. Same idea, just a different style. Found a link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy...QQcmdZViewItem
I saw the same retainer on Wilcox corvette's website. I did see a something similair on my trans, just unsure what I was looking at. BTW I found out the trans is 19" high. On my thread about my seeking advice on the removal of the trans from underneath the car, I am thinking I need to get the car at least 24" or more off the ground so I can roll the trans out. I purchased the trans jack another forum member said he was going to get when he works on his this week. Will I need to disconnect the modulator line and remove it prior to dropping the trans? I am also sure it will be a lot of fun (pita) putting the trans cooler lines along with the modulator line back on the trans while its under the car.
