Guys
I pulled off the steering box and rag joint and was a bit sloppy about removal...is there a set up procedure of sorts to get things right?
Or does one just set the wheel as straight as possible and set the steering wheel straight and go from there?
Thanks

Most C3 steering boxes and steering shafts have a flat on them so the rag joint can only go on one way. If you find the center of the steering travel on the box and put the steering wheel straight the rag joint should line up.
also, when you separated the shaft from the steering box, the shaft may have telescoped into the firewall. I put a ratched strap around the shaft and anchored to an A-Arm to pull it out. I had this problem when I couldn't get the two to meet....just a heads up so you don't stare at it for two days like i did.
With the box off,put it in a vise and find, borrow or rent a 0-30 in/lb dial TW. Check the rotation from lock to lock. Should be 5-12-5. 12 being center. Don't be surprised to find 2-3 lock to lock if it's stock. Look at the lash screw in the cover, does it show any threads over the nut? If more then 1 shows that is a good sign, if less then the gears are probably shot.
Look up my thread on the job, it will walk you through it.
The gap between the input and column should be approx 1.300" if you find more then the column may be collapsed as stated.
The 69PS to 82 boxes used a flat at 12 o'clock to mark center. The 63- 69manuals were full fine splined.
If you need help let me know.
