I recently installed a high flow catalytic converter on my '81 (four speed). I now want to install a pair of performance mufflers to further reduce back pressure and sweeten the exhaust note. Any suggestions? If so, where's the best place to buy?
I installed Dynomax Super Turbos.....Im very happy with them.
They are louder than stock, but not loud enough to annoy the neighbors.
They will be louder on your car as I havent replaced my Cat yet..and you have a better flowing Cat than stock...but I bet you will like them.
The best price I found was Summit Racing.
I bought mine almost exactly a year ago..this is the best I could find.
Summit Racing

FLOWMASTER :D three chamber flowmaster with cats will be very mellow. i have two chambers with no cats and i really like it. short of side pipes, i don't know if there is an exhaust i like better. just my $.02 :jester
summit has two chambers for $60/ea and three chambers for $90/ea. more chambers=more 'mellow' (read quiet)

Re: Need Recommendations for '81 Exhaust (Alwyn678)
I checked the DynoMax and Flowmasters on Summit's website. Both are shown without tips. Aren't they suppose to include tips built into the muffler or am I incorrect. (I'm at my office and don't have my parts catalog handy.)
tips? you mean shiny, chrome thingies that people stick on their mufflers? the mufflers come with an 'in' pipe and an 'out' pipe, about 3" long. any tips must be supplied by you. pretty stuff doesn't make me go faster so i just had the muffler shop bend a couple pieces of pipe at about 30* and weld 'em in place.
'been thinking about putting a couple of those ricer 6" coffee cans on the back just for S&G :jester
I ordered a pair of DynoMax Super Turbos from Summit Racing for my '81.
Now here's the million dollar question: Will these mufflers sound better with a high flow catalytic converter or a test tube (straight pipe). I have both parts and want to know which setup will offer the least back pressure and best sound.
Biker,
I went with the Dynomax Super Turbos on my 82 . . . I think you'll like them. They have a more aggressive sound than the stock cans, but they're not overly loud. Summit Racing had the best price. I also got the free-flow converter. Maybe you could clue me in as to how you got the old converter off. 250lbs of arm strength and a good soaking with "nuts off" hasn't done it yet.
Re: Need Recommendations for '81 Exhaust (DADS8T2)
go with that straight pipe for less backpressure..more flow...
and no , Im not in Naperville anymore....moved down south to GA....
as far as the tips go, they come in the box with the muffler...an inlet pipe and an outlet pipe/tip.
The outlet pipe is probably what you are referring to....it is bent downward - most people call this the
"tip"
Re: Need Recommendations for '81 Exhaust (DADS8T2)
Dads8t2,
The catalytic on my '81 is flanged at both ends. The bolts were rusty. However, with the exception of a couple sets, most of them simply broke in half when I removed them. Try using a breaker bar/socket combination for more leverage. You might also try heating the bolts before removing.
