I recently installed a new stage 2 qjet from Jet performance I carb looks great and works very well but what i did notice while setting the idle mixture was that i had about 1 1/2 inches less vacum on the guage they did provide a new base gasket and its 1/4 inch thick my question is where did that vacum go I have a cam that has .465 lift intake 224 duration on intake and .468 lift and 234 on exhaust weiand dual plane intake manifold long tube headers and patriot alum heads oh cam is flat tappet made by elgin use to run 15 in. of vac with old carb and regular gasket
prob vac leak, definatly check gasket as chev used several versions. power brake port prob not the issue if this was left open he would have a audible vacum leak with a no idle issue
When I switched carbs last month my vacuum at idle changed 2 hg and I had no vacuum leaks on either so I believe it can change that much just by switching to a different carb.

Take carb spray and shoot the base plate, intake where it meets the head and any other suspicous areas. The car will stumble or jump in rpms when and if you find a leak.. Also check brake booster by plugging or by passing it, there known to leak. If no leaks are found i would rule it the carb . THE CAR NEEDS TO BE AT IDLE FOR THE CARB SPRAY TEST :0)
