Default Overheating

This should be an easy one I think. 1977 vette, auto. If the radiator is pushing coolant into the overflow tank, what does this mean? while this was happening, the temp was increasing as well. what can cause this to happen?

Air in the coolant system! Have you been working on the cooling system lately?

Basically all of the radiator coolant was forced into the overflow tank and then the overflow tank was venting it overboard. I just finished draining/flushing the system...there was water left in the radiator when I tried to drain what was left. the cap was tight, all hoses look good. the water pump is working I think becuase when I flushed the radiator, I did it with the engine running and it was moving water through the stytem. I am suspect that the pump maybe going...is there anyway to tell? is this a hard thing to fix?

My 68 has a FULL mark on the radiator tank (passenger side) about 4 inches below the top. So "full" does not mean up to the cap!

The OP has a '77, very different cooling system than '68. All '73 and up Corvette rads are to be filled to the brim.

Sounds like a normal coolant system issue. You may have to drill a 1/8 inch hole in your thermostat to allow the trapped air to escape and allow the system to be properly re-filled. Still indicates to me that you have air in the system.

Stewart pumps recommends 3 holes only if you plug the internal bypass cicuit, which they do in there better pumps.
Using the bypass, 1 hole is enough.
Most tstats come with a hole that is less than 1/32"
