I have a 69 427/435 tripower. The alternator is stamp May 20,1968 and 61 amps.Although it has no power equipment and does not nedd all 61 amps it produces only about 35 amps. and around 12.7 volts.I have had a battery problem and wonder it I should get it rebuilt to the full 61 amps.I want to naturally keep the same casing on it now and where could I go to have a first class rebuilt done and be sure I get my casing back?
Normally a L71 car will not have a 61 amp alternator. More like 37-42. But most owners and those that look a Vette over will not be able to see the dates anyway.....If thats what you want, thats what you would get...Your car has power, {HP} but not much on electrical as there were no 435 hp air conditioned Vettes...requiring a high amp alternator....ie 61A

thanks very much for your reply. It does give me more info about what amp the car would have come with.
Don't worry about the amperage output- stock is more than enough. If you're only getting 12.7V from your present alternator, there's your problem. I recently rebuilt two of my spares, kits to do this are about 20 bucks on eBay and take maybe an hour to perform.
Is it an 1100882 or 1100825? If it is make sure you keep your alt and don't get a different one back. I recently restored one for a fellow in NJ and he requested the unit be insured for $2500.00 for return shipping as that is what he insured it for when shipping it to me. 35amp and 12.7 volts on a 61 amp alt sounds like it need a rebuild at least. Be sure to check your battery and wiring 1st.
