Finally got the timing dialed in.... sounds and feels like a beast now and sounds mean, much better than it ever did. It could have been from bad timing, or the worn out, fouled up plugs....
Anyway, I had a buddy come over and fix the A/C, its finally putting out some cold air. We had what we thought was belt squeal and the belt looked worn so I changed it, still have the squeal.... its not all the time, it'll sometimes make a little squeak on startup, but it really lets out a LOUD squeal when I hit the gas hard. What could it be? Whats confusing is it never made the noise before he put new fridgerant in it. Could it be that he put too much in it and that is causing the problem? I just stuck my head out to look at it when I start the car, it looks like the pulley occasionally trying to stop moving .... is that a bad clutch or is the entire compressor bad? It still kicks out cold air.
~80% of the r12 charge is all you can put in for the 134....do not overcharge....
second off that squeel, you sure it's not the metal/metal clutch on front of the comp that is not screaming when the thing stops...or is it for sure stopping the pulley too...??
if it is, and you not overcharged, you need a REAL American fan belt....if you look close I bet that belt is riding lo in the pulley slots and the backside of it looks curved with the shoulders higher, center is ditch....if so....you will see the outer wider section of the V is riding on the pulley, and in fact it does not have full contact....
most belt makers altered the design over the years, I"m convinced it's now all metric, instead of the old standard....
yet another reason I changed my '72 over to '88 up vette comp and serp drive....
It never made the noise until he charged it, I'll have to get him back over here to see what the charge is up to. The belt is the same model that was on there before teh noise started, a Dayco Top Cog 15585. I'm starting to think that it is coming from the A/C clutch. Could an overcharge of 134 cause the noise? How do I replace the A/C clutch? Part No?
Ok so the pulley spins freely and it doesn't wobble. When I spin the clutch around and I can hear a bit of noise inside if I put my ear to the compressor, it makes a tiny little squeak if I spin it quick enough.
Same car (with 454) but same problem. I've tried every belt made. Replaced the idler pulley (bad bearing). AC works great (R12). Belt noise is VERY LOUD.
