Recently replaced my engine wiring harness with one that's from the OEM. I've also placed a 650 cfm Holley carb on the car with electric choke. Can't seem to find a built in power source for the positive and negative tabs on the choke (which is understandable, as i'm pretty sure the stock had a mech choke). The links below are to pics of a brown (tan) wire coming off of the harness...does this do anything for the carb/choke? if not, what's it for...TCS system? Any help with getting power to the choke would be very helpful. Thanks.
Mine is just a wire I've scotchlocked (suitcase style connector) from my positive wire that feeds the coil. That brown wire might work, but you might have to cut off that connector and crimp on a spade that is rubber coated. Does that brown have power with the key on? Looks like some of the a/c control wiring.
Plan on that connector giving you problems down the road too.
I suspect that brown wire is for the idle stop solenoid. All you need for your choke is a ground (pick that up anywhere. Make a jumper to a carb stud. Then find a source that's hot with the key on, hook that up (i'd put a relay in there to protect the source) and roll.
As an electrician I've used these connectors for years on voltage as high as 277, if it is corrosion your worried about they make a weather proof version.
The *Correct*, no offense to any one, way to wire it is, The + Choke wire to the IGN tab in the fuse box, you can feed a good 18 to 14 gauge wire into the cab along the Tach cable entrance, keep it tight to avoid interference, over to the fuse box, Then crimp a red Female lug onto it, and just plug it in. The GND wire can get a large circular lug crimped to it, and it can go on any intake manifold bolt or carb hold down nut.
If you want to use the IGN tab later for more connections, you can crimp 3- 3" 18 gauge wires into a yellow female lug after twisting together, then crimp fully covered/encased male lugs to them, giving 3 outlets.
Just installed a Electric choke conversion kit two weeks ago.
