My 72 has air and there is no tank. It has a brass radiator and weeps on ground. I think the tanks were only for cars with the alum. radiator cars and big block cars.

Correct. It depends on which type of radiator you have.
The tank on my '72 vert was shaped like a fuel tank and bolted to the rear of the driver's side inner fender liner...probably still there, easy to miss....mine was broken from metal fatigue and so I cut it outta there but was unable to fix it.....this was some 15 years ago....I tossed it, and used that space for a cruise control....
for years I ran the car without one, only need operate the lights/wiper doors with the engine running anyway....
My 72 was a SB now BB non air car. My question is , if it were original would it come without a expansion tank or with one of these? I'm guessing none because I have this and plan to use it to prevent puking. Of course everybody at a car show is an NCRS judge and will point that out. http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb....Z5Z5Z50000050G
That's good news. Mine is a base engine car...so I am not missing anything. Thanks to everyone.
Roy
Base engine with manual transmission came with an external aluminum expansion tank paired up with an aluminum radiator.
Base engine with AC and/or automatic transmission had no external expansion tank but relied on the copper radiator tank for thermal expansion of coolant.
If you'd like a serious answer to your question, stop being one yourself.
Maybe I'm missing something but is this Mike Ward implying somebody ELSE is an A-hole?!?!? Imagine that. Practicing how to make/keep friends again Mike? Almost every thread you're involved with you seem to ruffle feathers.
Also , I was implying that car show attendees pic apart cars like they were judging for NCRS , that does imply that NCRS judges are a-holes. But thanks for changing the meaning. You harp about NCRS judges getting a bad rap and being called a-holes in other threads, what do you do?

Jeez...one bad apple ruins it for the rest.
As thin skinned as always I see. Don't go throwing stones if you're so sensitive.
-Your post contributed nothing to answering the OPs question.
-You tried to hijack it by asking about your own car
-You deliberately threw in another bash on NCRS and the NCRS people even though that's completely off topic.
-Your response above redoubled your attack, despite some seriously flawed logic.
And I'm the trouble maker?
BTW- your initial post confirms that you don't have a clue what the expansion tanks are for and why your intended use for it will fail. Good luck with your project.

As quoted by others to you on this forum, don't be a DICK.
Not true the LT1 cars did not have an expansion tank. The coolant overflow hose dumped right on the ground.
Oops, my mistake.
Ok, going straight from the A.I.M. :
Base with manual trans = aluminum
Base with A/C or auto = none
LT1 with or without A/C= none
ZR1 = aluminum
LS5 w/o A/C = aluminum
LS5 with A/C = brass
Base with manual trans = aluminum
Base with A/C or auto = none
LT1 with or without A/C= none
ZR1 = aluminum
LS5 w/o A/C = aluminum
LS5 with A/C = brass
Sorry about the confusion.

Thanks CC, good info.That answers my question. I'm at work and couldn't get to the aim.
