Your post is not very clear. However, if you are asking which years offer the best performance, I would rank them this way (from a purely stock perspective):

1968 - Probably the fastest of the C3s for the big blocks. Besides the L88s, the year also had the L71 and L71/L89 435HP cars. Marginally more power to the road than the 69s due to the 2.5 inch exhausts versus the 69 2 inch exhausts.

1969 - Even though the AL ZL1 might have been the most power of all for the C3s, the big blocks meant for the streets were still hampered by the smaller exhausts.

1970 - The small block LT1 was a great addition to the line-up and probably the best balanced C3 of all. No solid lifter big blocks though.

1971 - The reduction in compression hurts 71 versus the above noted years, but still you had solid lifter big and small blocks.

1972-1974 - The solid lifter big blocks were gone forever, but the small blocks, LT1 in 72 and the 73/74 L82s still had power to play with. And there was no restrictive exhausts due to the addition of cats.

1978-1980 - The cars were trying to crawl back from the nadir of the prior few years. 220-230 HP was available in the L82 versions of these vehicles.

1977 - Inproved verus the 75/76, but not up to 78 level

1982 - Auto only with first attempt at fuel injection. 200HP max

1981 - 190HP, not much to work with

1975/76 - The low point in Corvette power. Probably the slowest Corvettes since the 53/54s. 9.6 sec 0-60 (one mag review) shows how far thay had sunk compared to the 12 point quarter mile big blocks just 10 years earlier. Yet, they still sold well and allowed GM to gat back in the game later.

That's for power, if you want ease of repair:

Best - earlier cars without emissions plumbing
Worst - Later cars with emissions plumbing.

Parts availability - pretty equal for just about any year - but be careful with one-year only options like the 82 L83.

I think what has happened at Corvettes at Carlisle over it's 27 years; it's growth and inclusiveness, proves there is a Corvette for everyone. Whether it's memories, dreams, looks, performance, budget or...... there's a person to like every Corvette.
For me it's 71 small blocks.

Alan

Personally I like the 68's (prolly cause I have two) but A LOT of improvements were made for the 69's which in many people's opinion vaults them past the 68 as the most desirable C3 year for year.(there are always exceptions with some of the rare cars from any of the years) I still think they should have left the ignition key in the dash though. All moving it did was serve to wear the paint off your steering column from the rest of you keys hitting it and make the wiring slightly harder to get to if you needed to work on it. That plus I think it looks better, and set them apart a little bit, not so much like every other chevy column.

Big difference here between most valuable and just the best regardless of the value.

When I was looking for a C3 I was only interested in the 1980 with the front chin spoiler and rear spoiler molded to the body. My opinion is it looks the best and obviously can be modded to outperform a magnitude of newer cars.

Us 68 owners love the ease of finding parts, the solid wiring of the early models, the comfy door panels and the perfect size steering wheel. We don't have to worry about the word Stingray on the fenders when we paint. The overall reputation of 68's is stellar...

Investment wise there is a big differance between a 68/72 cars compared to the 75-80 cars.

would have to cut it off at '70 with the exception of the lt1 and the big blocks(454 torque motors). '70 was th last year of high compression motors.

lurk:
There are 2 groups 68-77 & 78-82. Really you should think about which group you prefer. Then 68 has some unique parts & 82 as you mentioned. Neither 68 or 82 guys seem to be having much of a problem ... anyway it's 69-81 by your definition.

PS Though you didn't ask, it is always funny when stock guys talk about performance!

Some of us can make any year very fast.

It would take you as long as it would take me to get used to driving on the wrong side of the road...
There's quite a few of us "right hooks" in the "Land Down Under"

Why is it that you yanks drive on the wrong side?

ps Picking a best year vette thread will likely build up just as much feedback as those previous threads titled:
"Small blocks better than big blocks! "

I personally liked the 80-82 look better than any other C3. But, I also like the chrome 68-72 look too, not to mention... having a 427 1969 Vette would be pretty damn awesome. But, in reality... being a father of two small kids, mortgage, job, a life etc... Am I really going to try to buy a 1969 with a BBC??? Probably not.

if ur jst tryng 2 find the best vet, try researching this forum,.... buy a book, test drive, sit in them etc. That's what I did and I could not have been any more pleased than what I purchased
