How does one set the clutch clearance on a R-4 compressor???? I have looked and searched to no avail. Unfortunately i do not have a shop manual for this year (79) nor do I have any that cover the R-4 compressor.
I can install the plate with the tool and tighten until it locks due to a lack of clearance. The threaded portion of the shaft is beyond the clutch hub at this point so I'm thinking something has to lock the Clutch plate into position
I have found some references to shimming but have no idea where the shims would go and there were none present when the clutch hub was removed
When you reinstall the outer portion of the clutch with the installation tool, simply insert a feeler gauge between the two clutch surfaces and tighten till you get the correct gap.
R4 is .020-.040. I just replaced front seals in 3 R4 compressors, all 3 had gaps of about .023. Was told that when you tighten the locknut on the shaft the clearance would close but I didn't see it happen. If it does, simply use the removal tool to pull it up some.
So the press fit is supposed to maintain the clearance??? Sounds a bit scary but maybe that's one of the reasons these compressor have a bad rep. Thanks for your reply
