I am at the point where I need to start thinking about the paint I am going to use. I will be painting the 68 conv. back to the original Rally Red. I have a Sherwin Williams dealer near my house and have been telling myself that I was going to use their Ultra 7000 system. However, yesterday I went over and price it all. I was a bit blown away. I knew the red base coat was going to be expensive but 713.00 a Gal...
After doing some searching I think I would like to use the SPI primers and clear, however I have a few questions.
1. Sherwin Williams wants to sell me a gal of red. I have seen on here that 1 gal of sprayable material is what I need. is that correct?
2. Those of you who have used SPI what Base coat did you use. And where you pleased with the results.
If the Original Rally Red was a nonmetallic why not shoot it in single stage urethane? If your doing it yourself it is much more forgiving than base and clear. You'll save money buying one product instead of two (Urethane vs. base coat & clear) it will look great, and closer to original than bc/cc. I use PPG products. Just what I would do.
Post this in the paint and body. SPI epoxy and clears are compatible with most if not all bases. If you have questions on their products, why not call Barry K directly and discuss base coats. I tend to shoot more paint than one gallon sprayable, especially true if the car is totally disassembled and you are shooting all inside areas too.
Red is one of the most expensive colors you will find and it pays to buy a first rate base rather than a cheap one for coverage and brilliance.

I used PPG base/clear and I bought 3 quarts base and one gal clear and had more than enough paint. I believe I paid around $600 dollars for the base clear and reducers and mine is non metallic code 66 orange for 77.

I used PPG single stage, beautiful finish, but fine scratches show up easily.
Sherwin Williams is some of the best paint I have ever seen......there is nothing wrong with going single stage either...I sprayed my 69 with PPG concept urethane single stage, and mixed 1:1 color and clear to srpay on top and it came out DEEEEPPPP....
Single stage is more forgiving, if you mess up no problem, just sand it down.
with base coat / clear coat you have to shoot your final cover perfect,
then shoot clear over the top of the base. 69VETT
