Guys...Which way does the thermostat go in...i.e. which way does the pointed part face - Up, toward the radiator hose, or down toward the engine block? thanks

Place stat....pointy end up...into the recess in the intake manifold. Coat both sides of paper gasket with a thin coating of Permatex gasket sealant; then nstall gasket. Place 100 grit sandpaper on smooth/flat area of concrete floor; place coolant intake housing face down on sandpaper; aggressively stroke housing back and forth and side to side to get sealing surface flat and [relatively] smooth. (Sanding marks are a good thing, as they will allow the gasket to 'bite' into the surface and make a better seal.) Clean housing and reinstall onto manifold. Put Permatex sealer on bolt threads, then install them and torque to 20 ft-lbs.; then re-torque to 25 ft-lbs. Install radiator hose and clamp.

The point is up, this picture shows a standard thermostat, just put it into the hole in the intake manifold.

What temp thermostat do most guys run with a stock water pump?
(Don't mean to highjack this thread, it has some helpful info.)

That sounds high but that is what GM in 1979 wanted to run for emissions. It is of course far less than the boiling point of water at 212*F, and much less than a pressurized system at 15psi and 50:50 water/coolant.
