This is on my 69, 350, auto. One more note, headlights dont come on and the interior light goes out when you turn the key to start position. Thanks for any help.
This sounds a lot like what mine is doing. When you'd tried to start it the starter seemed like it was struggling so I put the jumper/charger on for awhile. When it was done jumping, nothing from the engine bay and the interior lights turned off in the start position as well. This was on a 74 however, but I'd also like to know what the deal is.
Not trying to hijack the thread or anything, just curious

Fusible links are not fuses, they are wires that burn up to protect the rest of the wiring, you will find one near the starter and another near the horn relay, some cars have more than two. Go here for your wiring diagram. http://www.nrjvette.com/johdotukset/?c=d;o=d PG.
Thanks Pete, I knew that there weren't fuses for starting the car instead there where fusible links. I'll look for the one by the alternator first.. As for the op, it said in that second link by pete that dropping a wrench and causing an arch usually doesn't cause the link to burn up..
I already checked that fuseable link, has power on both sides. Its wierd when I turn the key on everything is on like should be but when I turn the key to start position everything goes dead. Also when the door is open the interior lights are on then I pull the headlight switch and all is dead. Has this ever happened to anyone before???
Sounds like you have a test light. Pull the headlights on and start probing and find out where the power stops.
edit- what your describing can be a bad connection at the battery posts, starter, neg ground cable at the frame or any others also. You could have cooked one of the connectors inside the bulkhead connector. start tracing !!!
