OK I'm crazy, but I've started removing paint with a razor blade. I plan to finish the job using soda blasting, but hey I started with a blade. Anyone have pics of their razor methods?
Not going to bad (just started). Don't seem to have much of an issue with the corner of the blade gouging into the body which is my biggest worry. Seems to go fairly fast.
I tried a heat gun, but was scared the body was getting too hot.
thr razor blade will do a good job on the color, but sandpaper or soda is needed to remove the primer. once the color is removed, the primer seems to come off well with sandpaper without too much effort. the concave areas are the hardest to work without gouging the glass. if i remember correctly, spi brand(popular epoxy primer)is not to be used on a soda blasted car.
i just checked spi website. for once i was right , the tech sheet clearly states that the epoxy is not to be used over soda blasted, metal treatments or rust preventatives. no idea why, though. i only half paid attention to the warning because i wasn't using any of those products.
you can ask Barry directly for the real answer.
But my money says someone soda blasted, then painted,
then had bad after affects from the soda, contaminating the paint surface.
Will your Soda blaster Guarantee, no paint defects ?
and if your hiring someone to paint it you must get their approval to soda blast.
or they won't Warrantee the paint job.
I'm pretty sure you will get no contamination issues by Razor blade and block sanding !
The rounded blade corner is a good idea.
The paint shop I plan to use uses PPG products and have used soda blasting to strip cars before so I'm not too worried.
What grit of paper should I use to remove the primer coat? I have tried 220 on the paint and it seems to work well.
