Hi CR,
After the Dealer Order for a Corvette was received by the Chevrolet Central Office it was entered as a Corvette Order in the computer and given an Identity Number for Chevrolet files (abbreviated Ident. No.).
This Identification Number was used by the Central Office for internal purposes to keep track of the order and to identify the vehicle as required through production on the assembly line.
MANY, MANY of the tank sheets I see have that corner cut off.
Regards,
Alan
Thanks Alan. So the vin never showed up on the tank sticker at all?
No prior to 1973, but it did show up on the last two pages of the bundle. The order copy was a 7 page bundle with carbon paper between the pages. Various pages went to different stations on the assembly line. One of these pages became the tank sticker. The last two pages with the VIN went to the station where the window sticker, car shipper, and manufacturer's statment of origin were created.
Upper left corners are often missing because the person bursting the bundle usually held it by the upper left, pulled away the tractor feeds, and burst the bundle.
Most tank stickers have a handwritten penciled number on them which became the job number. After bursting the bundle, the worker checked the last three digits of the VIN, subtracted 500 from it, and jotted down the job number.
Upper left corner torn; penciled job number.
The format of the order (build sheet) changed in '73.

Hi CR,
Here's another example of Mike's information... my 71's VIN, 6589... shows 89 in pencil on the tank sheet, same corner missing. The sheet is still glued to the tank. The Job Number, 186, appears a few places on the body in crayon.

Alan

The last 4 digits of the VIN are ususally written in regular pencil on the tank sticker (pretty faint), and the last 3 digits (or less 500) are usually written in grease pencil on the tank sticker.
