Hello all. I don't wish to beat a dead horse, but I have a wiper door question. I replaced a dead battery on my 1972 a few weeks ago. Removed the old battery, installed a new one. The minute I connected the cables to the new battery, the wiper door popped open and it has not closed since. At first the wipers worked, but now they no longer work.
Never had any problems prior to the dead battery, so I know all the vacuum lines are installed properly. Any thoughts? Thank you!
be sure the wiper door vacuum override switch is pushed up all the way. you say that at first the wipers worked-do you mean right after the battery was changed, or before the battery was changed? there's a solenoid under the dash attached to the tachometer that vents the vaccum to the wiper door relay and allows the door to open. with the ignition switch in the run position, listen for a click as you turn the wipers on and off. that will indicate that the solenoid is working properly. but, i don't believe it could have been damaged by changing the battery.
if the wiper door is not all the way open, the wiper safety switch(the switch on the firewall that is depressed by a plunger) may not be closing and passing current to the motor.
i have a feeling that you have a vaccum probem that is causing the wiper door to open partially.
willcox has posted an excellent wiper motor trouble-shooting diagram several times, do a search for it.
Hello again. The wipers and wiper door always worked perfectly until the dead battery. After I changed the battery, the wiper door popped open and has not worked since. The wipers continued to work briefly - for a few days - after the battery change, but now they no longer work either. Sorry for my first confusing note. Thanks again, Keith
first, download willcox's diagram and check for proper voltages. if the motor isn't running, it has to be a suddenly gone bad motor(probably not), blown fuse, bad wiper control switch(a long shot), the motor override switch under the steering column, the wiper control relay in the center console, or the mentioned safety switch. make sure the wiper door is up completely by pulling it up and forward a little. also manually depress the safety switch to be sure it's passing current.
