Default Steering Wheel Play

So just how much steering wheel play should a C3 have? When the steering wheel is mover from right to left how much movement should be there before the wheel move?

When the box is on center there should be no play or "lost motion".

if equipped with power steering with the engine off, you will feel a lot of play....start the engine to check play if so equipped.....good luck

When driving down the road I have about 1/2" movement in the steering wheel each way before the car moves.

'Free play' in the steering indicates that one or more of the following items needs adjustment/repair/replacement: Steering box needs adjustment; rag-joint is worn out; idler arm and/or steering linkage joints are worn; wheel bearings are 'shot' (not likely...you would be hearing from them); P/S control valve is defective [if you have power steering].

Which means that due to the distance from the center of your steering column to where your hands grabs the steering wheel, it is only moving a fraction of an inch ...which is fine. There is "built -in" free play in your cars steering and if it only moving 1/2"...I wouldn't worry.

But if you want to check... you can grasp your steering coupling joint (rag joint), (between the column and gearbox). While grasping the rag joint firmly, rock the steering wheel back and forth and feel for play in the rag joint.

As for adjusting your gearbox...that is tricky due to possible getting the gears to tight and causing the steering not to go back to center when you let go of the steering wheel after making a turn where it should start centering itself (somewhat) on its own. If the gearbox is adjusted to tight, the box will lock up and NOT turn back.

Also removing the power steering control valve and and adjusting the ball stud side to side play may be possible, but once again it is designed to have some movement.
