Default Wacky acting temp. gauge

Just bought my 78 L82 last week. Previous owner told me once in a while the gauge will go way past max temp line and stick. Engine and cooling system fine, seems to be just the gauge. It worked fine for a few days after bringing her home. Then a couple days ago it just flipped again past the max line and stuck there at time of starting the car. It stayed there for about 10 minutes of driving then dropped back down to normal.

Anyone have any ideas. Maybe I just need to have the gauge rebuilt.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It can be a bad sender, a bad gauge or a bad connection/wiring/ground.
You must first isolate the problem.
You can try first a resistor or a potentiometer ( better ) instead of the sender, and see if the gauge displays a stable value or not...

Have you made sure the wire going to the sender isnt touching anything else.. like a header?
