I just replaced my water pump with a Duralast CWP-461 only to find that the pulley scrapes on the pump - as though the shaft is not long enough. Has anyone experienced this? Any recommendations on a water pump? This one is obviously going back.
there is a short and long shaft water pump. Also don't assume just because the box has the right part number that the right part is in the box.
Corvettes have a unique water pump. They are neither the short or the long Chevy pump. They are like a short pump with a longer shaft. The shaft diameter is larger where the pulley fits on also.
I have adapted a short pump to a Corvette before by making a billet stepped spacer that goes on the shaft behind the pulley to space it out and it stepped up the diameter for the hole in the pulley.
you know i had the same problem last year with a pump from Orielly's, it was the correct pump, but the pulley hit the body. i found that the round hub where the pulley bolts to was pressed on the shaft too far. i took my pullers and pulled it about 1/4" more towards the end. problem fixed. pump is still on the car. check it out. dwp461 shows to be the correct pump for my 79 also. just fyi.

I bought one from Autozone that was supposed to be their regular cast replacement. When I looked in the box, I knew it was not the pump that should be in the box. Tried to tell the clerk, but he insisted it was right. So I paid him the 29.99 for the alum. high volume pump that was in the box instead of the regular cast one. Check autozone.com when I got home and they did not even list a alum pump for my car. Prob came from same mfg plant and they needed one more to fill order. Nice.
Dura-junk parts are made in Mexico and other foreign sources. Their quality control (if they even have any) is poor, at best. Buy it at your own risk.
P.S. If the "Zone" wants to take issue with me about this post, I will be glad to do a legitimate quality audit of their D-L parts and pass on the results to this Forum.

I agree. I took the Durajunk pump back today. Didn't feel comfortable breaking out the puller trying to get that flange out 1/4"....couldn't be "true" afterwards ....?
Not to many places have the pump in stock around town. Guess that's a blessing in disguise. What's the GM link .....gmpartsdirect?
