I'm sorry, I know this forum is plastered with timing questions and info. I have read most of the info hear and have learned more than I could ever thought I would. All the info is amazing and I thank all of you who have put the time in. that being said, I feel I have a relavent question that is outside of the info given. So here we go.
I have a 1972 L82 that is a Bubba dream. Not only is everything not where it's supposed to be, he painted over all the tags, ALL of them! The other issue is that the motor is not original either. I researched the ID and it is a 1975 350 that was in a conversion cab c-10. I've been slowly picking at things and now am trying to straighten out the engine. I'm looking for any info on the Timing specs for this engine. Even a starting point would be great. I'm not afraid of research if there's a source to find out.
Looking at the pully and plate it's marked for 8 degrees btdc. Does that sound right?
You don't really need to find the specs for that specific engine - all GEN I SBCs respond generally to the same timing curve, although a little fine-tuning will be required.
Bump it up to 10*btdc and go up 1 degree by one degree until it feels right to your driving style.....I'm at 13*btdc but I don't care about 1500-2000 rmp...That's slow cruising, so I like the lower 1/2 of the engine doing the work there and the low rumble that I get from stop sign to stop sign ....I like to floor it and have instant response and good "pulling" power all the way up. That's when the valves and pistons really work together perfectly for me......You really have to know what part of the "curve" suits your driving style. It seems to be a static situation for me , as every 350sb has been....I'll never be satisfied but I'm pretty damn close right now !

if its all bubbaed up....you may want to verify that TDC on your harmonic balancer is actually at TDC...just like billa said...there are lots of info on how to do this and commercially available tools.... you basically put a bolt in the spark plug opening and rotate the engine by hand unitl it stops against the bolt and then you back it out slowly and rotate it some more until it stops against the bolt you keep doing this and looking at the timing marks and finally when it stops hitting the bolt you are in the down ward stroke and have just passed TDC
I want to thank you guys for responding. I got her all set up yesterday! She's running much better. I was more nervous than anything, but once I got in there it was pretty by the numbers. Thanks for the help.
