Cooling Fan
I have been reading some of these posts discussing the cooling fan and how it should not spin by hand. Mine does, but it also starts running as soon as I start the car. It is a '79 that is new to me and I am learning as I go, mainly through you experts out there. Is the clutch bad or has it been modified to run the fan all the time?

Get the engine hot, like off a freeway run, pull over pop the hood, and kill the engine, the fan should stop almost immediately with the engine say one or two revs....if not, the clutch is bad....

Much simpler: next time you're sitting stuck in traffic note the temp readings. If they stay at a reasonable level, your clutch is fine.
The spin-it-at-rest test is almost worthless IMHO. Too many variables.
