Default Cam Timing Overview / Primer?

Can someone either point me towards a primer on cam timing or give me a "for dummies" explanation? For a street engine, I am assuming i would want the cam timing to to be "zero" but when and why do you advance or retard the cam timing when installing a camshaft?

How do you decide what to do and when?

Thanks
Shane

The last two cams I put in my car I installed them straight up or at zero / as was explained to me by the guy who does my machine work if you advance the cam (typically 4*) it will give you a little more grunt in the bottom end (off idle - low rpm) if you advance the cam it will give more at the upper ends of the rpm range (more for racing) Most people either install their cams advanced or at zero for a street motor. Talk to the company or speed shop you are buying the cam from and see what they have to say. You really need to match the cam to the rest of the components in your motor to get the best bang for your buck.

plus some cam manufacturers grind an advance already into them, for example many comp cams already have 4 degrees already in it when installed at 0.

Default They write entire books for this.

Soooo many variables. But for most street driven chevys the consensus is 4* advance is the best which means the cam is installed with the #1 cyl intake lobe center line installed 4* earlier. Example: cam with intake CL=110 after #1 piston at TDC would now be at 106* after #1 piston hits TDC.

Hope this helps ya,
