I noticed that you guys have those autometer guages I love the look and would like to do the same thing but I have some technical questions.
1 which exact guage did you use
2 how did you install them modifications hook ups ect
3 do I need to convert from cable drive to electric.
Your help would be great as my current speddo is about to give up and die.

I use the 5" mechanical speedometer and 5" electronic tachometer.
The gauges in the center gauge bezel are 2 1/16" electonic gauges (exept oil pressure - which is mechanical)

The hookup of the speedometer was very easy. The 68 speedometer cable fits the Phantom Speedometer. For later models you will have to change your speedometer cable. (you could get a 68 cable)

3 do I need to convert from cable drive to electric

Autometer doesn't sell tachometers that work with cable drive. You will have to connect your tachometer to the positive pole on your coil or to the TACH port on the HEI Ignition. I personally always convert my Vettes to electronic HEI Ignition. (much better reliability)

The most difficult part of the conversion is to get them gauges into the dash.
I did the conversion like that:

I removed my old gauges (the whole unit including lens etc..). Then I removed the gauge itself from the metal bezel that holds it. After that I drilled two holes for the two studs of the Phantom gauges. I also had to cut out some pieces of the metal bezel where the bulbs for the Phantom Gauges mount. After that I secured the Phantom gauges into the metal bezel and bolted them back onto the rest of the whole unit. (after removing the old lens of course). The last step was to put the whole unit back into the dash. The gauges on the center gauge bezel are much easier to install. After removing the old gauges you can just slide them into the holes and secure them from the back with the hardware that comes with them gauges.

P.S. If your Vette is not an "all original" Vette - Autometer gauges are the way to go. They are cheaper, more accurate and better looking than the stock style gauges!

no my car is not origional by any means and I would love to stop the ticking of the speedo.
the thing that scares me is reinstalling the speedo and tach pannel it was a real pain in the (I) are the new guages smaller, so they fit back there better.

Oh yes I almost forgot that the reason I was asking about the cable was for the Speedo which you already addressed

The original gauges are approx. 6 inches wide and 1.5 inches deep. The Phantom guages are approx. 5 inches wide and 2.5 inches deep. Because the Phantom gauges are much deeper - they don't sit that far in the back in the bezel (at least the way I installed them)

Aaron76-I used Autometer's Pro Comp 5" in dash electronic speedometer and Tach. The speedometer is programmable and goes up to 160 MPH and has a push button calibration. It requires 500 to 400,000 pulse/mile. I decided to used a electronic speedo because I didn't want to hassle with drilling a hole in the tail shaft to relocate the Vss transducer, thus leaving an opening for the gear to drive the original analog speedometer. The Tach is an conventional electronic tach. I bought the gauges from Jegs. I made custom brackets to hook up the gauges. You won't need to go to an electronic speedo. The mechanical speedo's are cheaper as well.

I feel so stupid :conehead but I forgot to ask about the high beam and turn sig indicators. Where and how did you relocate them.

I got rid of the POP UP HEADLAMP indicator, the Seat Belt Indicator and override switch. The left turn indicator is now located where the seat belt warning was and the right turn indicator where the headlamp indicator was. The high beam indicator is where the Seat Belt Indicator override switch was located!
I don't need the headlamp indicator because I don't have pop up headlamps and I don't have seat belts installed! (I don't need them because my 68' was manufactored before 1968 (Dec. 1967)

In my car all the indicators remain in their factory locations (between the two gauges) obviously this only works with 78-newer cars.

Unfortunately the indicators are located on the speedo and tach on pre 78 Vettes..... Therefore I had to relocate them when switching to the Autometer gauges!
