Default Upper Radiator Hose Replacement for Idiots - 78

I need to replace the upper radiator hose on my 78 and it seems like a pretty straight forward job. Drain coolant, remove old hose, put on new hose, fill with coolant, and "burp" the system. I'm fairly handy, but not a trained mechanic by any stretch of the imagination. (And, I'm an engineer, which probably makes things worse.)

Any tips, tricks, or pitfalls to look out for?

No reason to drain the coolant, unless you just like replacing it. 2 clamps off and 2 back on. Top off the system and then run it to make sure it cools correctly.

Check placement for fan/alternator belt clearance. Twist/adjust as necessary. That belt can cut through a hose very quickly.

You may have a belt guard which helps. My 1974 does not unfortunately.

You might want to order a hose from one of the Vette vendors like Dewitt's or Zip to make sure you get one that fits. I had no luck at the AutoZone and Advance Auto stores in my area. The part number they listed may have fit some years but it wasn't the right one for my 72. Bring your old hose with you if you go shopping locally.

If it has been several years since the thermostat was changed, putting in a new stat and gasket would be a good thing to do. Clean old surfaces well, install stat, then put a light wipe of Permatex gasket sealer on both side of the gasket & install it, then button it up (25 ft-lbs on the bolts).

Thanks for the help guys. I got a new hose from Napa and it seems to line up well with the old one. Not sure when the Thermostat was changed, but I will look into that as well. Good call...

if you have to cut the old hose off, don't use the tip of the knife (you'll gouge the neck), use the flat side like you're peeling an orange.
