Are the pins that hold it in just pull out type? Or is there some sort of special tool I will need? The underhood insulation looks like a cat tore into it and I would just rather get rid of it.
The pins on my 78' are split down the center and spread apart slightly (see photo above) Squeeze the 2 legs together and the washer just pulls off. Do your pins look like this?
Also I think the pins are different from a 76 and a 78
Yes, I see that now. Here is a page from Doc Rebuild catalog and it looks like yours is a plastic pin with barbs (or it's a "service" replacement). MAYBE if you are careful you can pull the washer back off against the barbs. Also, a little heat from a hair dryer will soften the pin allowing removal of the washer.
Just a suggestion from experience, but you might want to replace that insulation with new insulation instead of leaving it off. My buddy removed his on a '76 and after a few months of summer driving his hood paint began to fade. Had to have it repainted and then replaced the insulation. It's there for a reason. Good luck!
The purpose of the hood insulation is for noise reduction....not necessarily heat. I took mine off 2 years ago and have had no problems with the hood fading, paint bubbling or anything like that. ....and mine's a daily driver in Louisiana's summer heat!!
The insulation is for both noise and heat build-up in the engine compartment. With the attention to cost reduction and to weight reduction [at that time], GM would have omitted that 'blanket' if they thought it was unnecessary.
