On my window regulator. I went to raise the drivers window yesterday and it went almost to the top and the motor made a grinding noise as the window jumped a little. It goes down ok but when I try to raise it all the way, it goes about an inch from the top and stops but the motor keeps going. Anybody install one of the regulator gear repair pieces? I looked online at Willcox and found a replacement gear, but it looks like I'll have to have new rivits etc. Where can I get the repair piece instead of the whole gear?
'75, would you mind sending me a PM with the link to the website?
I have the same problem, took the door panel off and the "half moon" (whatever that part is called) has teeth worn down.
I used the gear repair kit and it worked for about 2 months before it stripped out the thin and flimsy gears on it! A waste of money at lease for me and my power windows! Ended up buying a used regulator assembly on ebay for $50 and that took care of the problem.
I used a repair kit and properly installed it using a TIG welder, made sure the fix was as good if not better than factory workmanship. It has been working well for over a year now. If you don't have good welding skills, a shop should only charge $20-30 for properly setting the new gear into regulator.
The stronger than stock aftermarket gear is best.
No special tools to remove assembly however remember that spring is stiff so be careful & watch out for your fingers.
Welding is needed to remove & install the gear.
Come on!!! That regulator is almost 35 years old and worn in more places than just the gear teeth. If you go through all the trouble to remove the regulator for repair you'll find that the pivot point is sloppy and the nylon rollers are worn. Do yourself a favor and buy a new regulator so you won't have to be redoing the procedure next year.
In some cases people will purchase the regulator gear and not pay attention to the drive gear on the power window motor. Usually if regulator gear is gone, the motor gear will have issues as well.
It is also important to replace the bushing in the regulator that the motor rides in. This bushing comes with the power window regulator gear.
I think this is the gear Ganey is talking about! Yes it's better than stock, stainless steel and will come with the motor bushing and detailed instructions on how to install it. http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...oducts_id=2007
I don’t really care for the weld on bolt on half a gear I’ve seen advertised. This is the gear that bolts on to the side of the old gear. It’s to hard to get the regulator in and out of the car to be doing the job twice.
Another thing… When you have the regulator out of the car please always check the rollers on the ends of the regulator! Again, you have this out and this is the time to replace them vs. doing it down the road. Rebuilding these is relatively easy to do, getting it in and out is the hard part.

I had this apart a couple years ago and replaced all the rollers and cleaned and lubed the slides with lithium grease. Till now I had not heard anything bad about the bolt on repair for the gear so I ordered one last night. If it looks too thin or weak when I get it then I may just get the stainless gear instead. I'm a heavy equipment mechanic/welder by trade, so no challenge on this little task.
75, I'm sure you can do the install especially if you are a welder by trade! Most people will try to drill holes to install this gear and they have to be pretty much on the money. Welding would be my choice on it.
You should check the bushing the motor gear rides in for excess slop when you have it apart! There is always a slight amount of play here, but excess will lead to failure of your new gear. I've never measured the clearance on this since we always use the entire gear to do the repair and replace the bushing while were in there.
