Default 327 heads...

what are the best stock 327 heads out there ie ones that one would be ok with just saving them?

i know with a set of 882s i can get about 320-335 HP out of a 327 but i may get lucky and the engine i buy i get a set of "better heads" what numbers are good and what ones are even worse then the 882s

thanks guys

this is for an camaro build but it thought it might be something some budy here who wants to build up/resto a 327 could benefit from.

There were no 327 heads with hardened seats, so that is 1 strike right out of the box. Another is no accessory holes for '69 up style brackets. Now 327 and 350 do overlap so there are heads that originally came on 350s that can be used on 327s (same size combustion chamber). In my opinion though, I would leave the original heads to the restorations. In most cases you can buy a set of Vortecs for what the machine work costs on an original set of heads and be way ahead in the long run. My .02

Go with a set of aluminum heads. They don't have to be the mega buck ones. The reduced tendency for spark knock allows better timing and the reduced weight is plus also.

I went with the Edelbrock performer RPM heads with 64cc chambers. Gave me the exact same CR as the iron heads (10.25 measured not assumed) Bolted them on, adjusted the timing to 36* all in at about 3000 rpm and never touched them again. This was 2 years ago and they have added some other products since. They may not be the end all killer race heads but are great for the street.
