Default Seating front wheel bearings.

After packing the front wheel bearings and installing the seals, i went to seat them in place. As i was turning the hub, i tightened the big nut at the same time till i could not tighten the nut anymore, there was lots of force required to turn it anymore.. I then backed it off one flat spot on the nut to get the cotter pin in. Is this the correct way to do this? The hub spins, but not freely.

If I remember correctly, the shop manual says to tighten the nut to 12 ft./lb. while spinning the hub, then back the nut off 1 flat. Someone chime in if I am not correct. It worked great for me.

There is a Torque Spec. that you need to tighten your spindle nut to, which I can't remember off the top of my head but it is generaly 30-35 ft.lbs. I will tighten the spindle nut while rotating the tire, or hub, untill I take all of the end play out of the hub, but I try not to exceed the torque spec. If I still have a little play, I'll tighten up mabey 10 lbs. over spec but no more than that. If you still have excessive end play then you need to break out the mic. and start measuring because somthing isn't right. It should not take much force to rotate the hub on the spindle. Pull it apart and try it this way, see if it loosens up any

I forgot to tell you, after all of the endplay is out of the hub, back your spindle nut off a turn or so and then retorque. This should get many trouble free miles!!

Did you use a brass 'drift' to drive the bearing race down completely before any further installation? You can't expect the torque on that nut to put the race down completely.

I re-used the race and bearings, they were in great shape and ok to use again.

Hi Mr. Grumpy, boy am I glad your getting this close. Tighten the spindle nut to 16 N'm (12 ft. lbs. ) while turning the wheel assembly forward by hand to fully seat the bearings. This will remove any grease or burrs which could cause excessive wheel bearing play later. Back off the nut to the "just loose" position. Hand tighten the spindle nut. Loosen spindle nut until either hole in the spindle lines up with a slot in the nut. ( Not more than 1/2 flat). I do mine like Ford, ( 24 ft. lbs. ) loosen to first hole. Have a great one buddy. Gene
