Is there any way to tell the difference visually between a 69 427 and a 70 454 engine without removing the cylinder heads or the oil pan? The block casting numbers can be the same. Thanks for any help.
Casting date code on the block will be different. I don't know the effective date for the switch-over from 427 block to 454 block production, but after a specific production date, all such castings would be intended for 454 use or for spare block production for either engine. There may have been some minor casting revisions done at that time [or not], but the blocks for those engines are essentially the same. As far as 'legitimacy' for a specific vehicle, the casting date for the block would have to be 'correct' for when the car...meaning some weeks prior to vehicle assembly.
