Default TH350 Fluid Question

I just put a shift kit into my '77 TH350...I put 6 quarts of fluid in, drove the car for about 10 minutes, shifted through all the gears to make sure everything was seated. I don't think the reading on the dipstick is accurate; about how much fluid should I put in, I am affraid I may be putting into too much. The book says 5 pints for a trans fluid change, or 20 pints for completely dry system...not sure about the "pints" (may be a typo).

The system was not completely dry, just removed the valve body. Looking for a ball park capacity number. Does 6 quarts plus or minus sound close?

put a bm shiftkit in our 79, th350, took about 5 1/2 qts. to fill it back to full on dipstick.
trans. hot, engine running in neutral. good luck. hope you installed a drain plug in the pan while it was off. incase it was too much.

Why do you doubt the dipstick? Is it (or the dipstick tube) not original to the tranny? If they are original parts, just fill per the indication on the dipstick (engine warm and running). With a cold engine & not running, you should still see some oil at the bottom end of the dipstick. Don't worry about how much oil it takes to refill. Your tranny oil level may have been LOW before you installed the shift kit.

With it hot and running compare both sides of the dipstick for the level. For some reason, one side will show high and the other show low, right up to the point it's full, and then both sides show the same.
