Default How to adjust standard shifter?

I have a standard muncie shifter, chrome handle with "t" pull up reverse and was wondering the steps to adjust the shifter. It is on my 72. It seems the shifter hits the shifter bezel in 1st and 3rd.
Thanks
Dave

You'll also need to make this gauge.

Hi H67,
If your metal working abilities are limited, (like mine),you can make the guage that Roger showed (and you need) from a stiff plastic putty knife from the hardware store!
Regards,
Alan

What is the total width of the tool?
Is the one measurement 644 thousandths?
Thanks Dave

Never noticed that was missing. It started out as 3/4" wide putty knife. I copied that out of a GM shop manual. The .644 is the important part. Here is the one I actually use when the shifter is in the car.

If you move the swivels down to the lower holes it will shorten the throw and keep the shifter from hitting the bezel.

Check to see if you have washers under the front of the shifter bracket (2) in picture.
If you do take them or one out.

This moves the shifter front to back.
Hope it helps.
