Default Carb choice and Electronic Ignition

This is my wifes vette. The motor is not stock and was cast a built in march 69. Intake and exhaust manifold appear to be original. Any way, it has the Q-jett carb installed which i have had to split and clean out. It does not idle well but runs ok at higher rpms. Would a Holly carb be better than rebuilding the Q-jett? Also, the petronix electronic ignition, is that a good choice? it still has points and I have replaced them along with condenser, plugs and wires that I got at ecklers. Not looking for more HP I just want it to be reliable for her to drive. Thanks for any info.

There is nothing unreliable about a qjet, or points and coil ignition. You would be changing parts just to make the car 'different' but certainly not 'better'.

Properly set up and tuned the Qjet and points are a good system and will work very well. If you don't want to mess with points many have changed over to Pertronix with good results. The carb can be rebuilt to better than new. For a stock motor it is tough to beat a Qjet carb.

Carb is your choice - QJets, when set up correctly, are excellent. I have a Holley 650 DP on mine (came with no carb) and it is also a great carb and has been very reliable.

As far as ignition, keep the following in mind:

As the points wear, get dirty or burnt, the car will start to run crappy, but it WILL get you home

With the Pertronix (or ANY electronic ign), they work till they DON'T period. When it fails, it will NOT get you home! Carry a set of points, condenser and sufficient tools to replace the Pertronix with the spare points - so you can get home.... This is first hand experience - and I'm sure glad I had the points with me!!

I would have have the rochester rebuilt. Anyone have any knowlege of a reputable carb shop in the central Florida area?. The last qjet I had rebuilt was off a camaro and I had the same problem i had with it before I was supposedly overhauled. thanks in advance.
