Wondering if I should look further for a pair for my 80 L-82. Quality seems to be in order. How do they sound? What kind of gains can I expect? Thanks
The quality of the Hedmans is equivelant to other bargain headers like dynomax or flowtech the small block headers however seem to often encounter interference withthe idler arm, often requiring a dimple in one tube to clear them.
Hedman to the best of my knowledge is the only mfr that offers AIR tubes for emissions equiped vehicles which your 80 would be. Though if there is no emissions testing in your locale then that wouldn't matter.
As for gains, if you are connecting to your factory exhaust with a stock motor then no set of headers alone will provide anything significant in gains. Sound wise they are going to be no different than any other full length header short of hooker sidepipes.
I run a set of hedmans on my car, I'm totally pleased with them even despite the clearance dimple at the idler arm, I have a coated set that I bought used over a decade ago and they look no different now than they did the day I installed them.
For the most part any full length setup will get you the same gains, the dynomax headers seem ti fit a tad better judging from what I've read.
Here, this is what mine sounds like. Its headers with resonators, no mufflers. Not nearly as loud as straight pipes but gives it a great sound in person. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJC5wBAIVyg
Suggest you look at dynomax cerama coat headers. I researched them vice Hedman Elites and found many complaints on the Hedmans about fit plug clearance, and the idler arm issue. The dynomax fit perfectly and have maintined their sheen nicely. Many other forum members will agree. Worth a look
I just installed a set of Flowtech ceramic coated headers from summit. Fit perfectly, don't need to dimple, ground clearence very good. Can't be happier with them. C.
Hedman has very good BB headers & emissions headers for SB.
Hooker makes very good headers for BB & SB.
The Dynomax Corvette SB Cerama-Coat full length headers fit & flow great, much better than is commonly known. I have been rec. them & many have them now.
I have the long tube headers and they seem to be lower to ground than others , but they "sure sound good !"
I recently ordered the Hedman 68306. I sent them back because the pipes where scratched right out of the box and what I thought where far to many clamping marks where the bends where made. The second pair they sent me where not any better. Now looking at the FlowTech or Dynomax.
