Default harmonic balancer? gone bad

last drive of the year got it just about home and hear a metla rubbing sound. couldnt find it. then went under the car and found the harmonic balancer ?pulley? rubbing the timing cover very lightly and sometime a bit more then others. i caught this in time before it did any damage.....i hope.

is this a sign of bad balancer or something more? care runs great except for this now. the balancer and engine are original to my 1979 l48

Oh man....You just saved your car....The same exact same thing happened to my 79...I changed the water pump out and saw the balancer was 1/4 " out of itself , ....The rubber seal in the middle of the balancer deteriorates and the inside seperatres from the outside of the balancer.....It will eventually fly off and you can just imagine what happens then......Bad things man....Git er done.....

Yes that's common when the balancer starts coming undone.
