So I had this issue last year, took it to this local mechanic( who worked on my dads cars ) and it said it was the switch or something. So he fixed it and i spend $350. Now again its having the same problem, i dont want to take it to these mechanics (been burned by them too many times). Im now gonna take this problem upon myself and do it. can some one tell me what the problem could be? Im thinking its the steering colum itself and am thinkin about getting a new one from summit.
You'll need a test light and a wiring diagram. Basically start by disconnecting the + coil wire and check for power with the key off. If so work back from there to the ignition switch.
what am i looking for exactly? the car wont turn off.... i had to disconect the battery...the switch was having and issue were i had to press the key and switch in to turn off...
The switch is at the end of the steering column. When you turn the key a long rod moves the switch. It is held to the column by two small hex head screws. The switch is on the top of the column. It can be slid back and forth to adjust it. Sounds like it's out of adjustment. Loosen the two screws and slide it slightly in one direction and see if that helps. It seems to be from your description that it is binding in the run position.
First thing I would do is remove the gauges fuse and see if that makes the engine shut down. Depending on what has been done to the seat belt interlock system I have seen them backfeed through the pink wire.
Its possible the yellow wire coming from the R terminal of the starter solenoid is feeding power to the coil with the ignition off if you still have the points distributor. The easiest way to check is to cut the yellow wire at the coil and see if the engine turns off. (If you don't want to cut the factory wiring ,remove the yellow at the R term of the solenoid and tape off, then run a temporary wire from the R term to the pos side of the coil and then cut this wire or disconnect it to see if engine shuts off.)
