Default Water in mufflers?

I just installed two new mufflers on my Corvette. I once was told by a friend that you should drill a small hole at the bottom most part of the end of the muffler to let water drain out. Anybody ever hear about something like that?

That is a good idea if you make a lot of short runs with your car that never let the exhaust get fully hot. If you make long runs the exhaust gets hot enought to evaporate any condensation.

Common practice especially in cold climates. Be sure to use a small drillbit and drill it in the lowest spot. There is no noise increase with a small hole.

I had a '90 Plymouth Voyager that had a small hole in the resonator & muffler. I don't know if that was factory or if the previous owner did it. Neither hole ever rusted bigger, but the muffler still rusted in another spot.

I agree that it shouldn't be a problem unless you typically make short runs that don't give the system time enough to heat up.

The replacement muffler for a relatives Acura had a small drain hole in it. My mother doesn't drive her BMW hard enough. I take it out for the occasional "excercise" session, once I actually heard water boiling in the muffler. We already had to replace that muffler, rotted from the inside out.

Almost all new cars have small holes in the mufflers, My vette's mufflers came with the holes only way to go

Thanks everyone, I wondered as the two mufflers on my 79 point down on the inlet side and i see water blowing out as she warms up. I'll drill two small holes in the low ends of the mufflers. :yesnod:
