I put a Kenwood head unit in, 6.5 in full range speakers in the kick panels (I used Kenwoods and they fit fine. Lots of posts recommend Polk Audios). I installed an amplifier on the back bulkhead, and an 8 inch sub in the jack compartment. I built a plywood enclosure for the sub and the whole thing is hidden by the compartment door. I thought I might build a new door with the center cut out and covered with speaker cloth, but the bass comes through fine with the original door in place. You may be able to fit a 10 inch sub in the compartment, but then the minimum volume requirement for the enclosure increases. You may not be able to fit the required size of enclosure in the jack compartment. It is pretty "stealth" and the T-tops still fit in the back.
The problem now is what to do with the jack.....Also, to be honest, I am not impressed with the sound quality of the Kenwood speakers. I wish the highs and mids were a little sharper. The bass "hit" from the sub is really good, though. Maybe if I went with the Polks I'd be happier.
Most people complain about the sound quality and volume from 4x6 speakers. The advantage of those is that most brands will fit behind the kick panel without having to cut up the panel. I cut a round hole in my kick panels (they were cracked anyway) and used the supplied grilles with the 6.5 in rounds. I also used peel and stick "Fat Mat" on the back side of the panels to help deaden vibrations. Good Luck!
i tried doing the 6.5s in my 69 and ran into a problem very few people seem to mention.
if youve got a clutch, your foot will hit the speaker every time you go for the clutch, unless you some how snake your foot around the speaker.

I haven't had that problem. Maybe my grilles are slimmer. The hood opening handle does get in the way a little on the driver's side.
maybe ive just got big feet, but my foot barely fits between the side of the clutch pedal, and the wall. so anything that sticks out from the wall gets in my way.
