Default new engine

so I need a new engine for my 79 vette and I was looking at gm's crate 350's or a rebuilt 350 on ebay from phoenix motors for around the same price with an intake manifold, more HP and a 1 year warranty. I know the GM 290hp crate motor sounds good but Its $1900 without shipping, tax,or an intake manifold. the phoenix motors rebuilt is that price shipped so what do you guys think or what are some other options I have? I am looking to spend around 2k for the motor

Warning......Do not buy from T&L Engines.......
Buy local or from GM. As it was put to me, buy from some one that you can poke with a stick.

Scoggin Dickey usually has a special around Thanksgiving offering free shipping on any GM crate engine. I got my ZZ4 from them for zero shipping charges. Subscribe to their newsletter and you'll get a notification.

I just got a new crate motor from Pace performance. Its a 350/300HP and came with a new Edelbrock manifold. It was around $1,900 plus delivery. Its now sitting in my shed waiting for spring to get here.

Buy local, or get a machine shop to build one for you. Go to the local track and ask more than one guy who build reliable motors. If you must buy a crate go to your local GM dealer and get a GM crate, I hear the Mexicans are getting pretty good at putting them together these days. At least you get the "it's your fault" warranty

That 290 GM Crate is a Dog. Rated net, a guy, here on this forum, installed one in his '81, replacing the stock motor. his 1/4 mile actually went UP 1.5 seconds. better to get a stout, rebuilt 4 bolt main short, and some after market $1k aluminum heads,, choose your own cam. that will be the medicine!

That thing is a Dog, with some black paint and a nice, aftermarket intake to fool the unschooled. 76cc heads? 190 intake valves? 8.5:1 comp ratio, it's 1976 all ove again. Short block on it is probably fine,, it's all in the heads. The state of the art right now is aluminum,, 2.02 intake, 1.60 exhaust, about 850-1k. With 64cc chambers for 9.2-9.5 comp ratio, for true 300+hp, 400ft/lb torque, with a 100lb weight savings over stock. see my build. I don't recommend reusing the short like i did, that's why i recommended you getting a new short block. but you can see what works. C. Plus, pulling and saving your original #'s matching motor is a good idea.

When did GM change their valve size?

I got my crate from Carolina Machine Engines. Just a bunch of Carolina boys that build a lot of race motors over the years and know what they are doing. Mine is a 350/400hp motor. It seems to be holding up after two years. It ran me right at $2,900 plus shipping. Jegs or Summit are great places to look too.
