I am going to give it one shot, before I order one. My speedo is jumping. Connected drill to cable going to speedo, and no jump. Lubed the cable from the tranny, and it seems smooth. Took the transducer apart. Cleaned and lubed the gears. Should there be any kind of lube on the metal plates, or just clean them up good? Thanks

The metal disc, etc. in the transducer need to be absolutely clean. Getting dirty/oily is the primary reason for them getting sticky/jumpy. Clean everything with a good solvent to remove all grease & oil. Use fine wire to clear/clean any orifices in the unit; then clean and/or replace the filter at the bottom of the transducer. When that gets filthy/clogged-up is when the 'trouble' starts.

Had the same symptoms on my 78 a year ago. Problem was the rotating disk in the transducer had somehow moved a bit on its shaft - or the shaft had worn - and disk was rubbing slightly on the sensor plate. When I inserted the square tang of a small round file into the socket where the speedometer cable from the transmission fits and rotated the file, I could feel and hear the rubbing. With nothing to lose by trying, the fix was to very carefully tap on the shaft with a small hammer while holding the disk in an attempt to reposition the disk so it would not rub. After a few taps, I would reassemble the unit and check whether it was still rubbing. I was surprised - it worked! And it's still working just fine even after much use since the fix. Speedometer needle and cruise speed hold are both rock steady.

Good luck!
