Default Starting procedure after fuel pump replacement

Replaced the fuel pump on a 74 BB. At the time of replacement the gas lines were bone dry. I just cranked it over for 20 seconds a shot about 5 times letting it rest for about half a minute between tries. Main gas line to carb is still dry. Is that to be expected when when the whole fuel system has been drained ? Is there a procedure I should follow - a little gas in the carb ? - to get things moving ? I have removed the fuel tank before and had no problems restarting the car afterwards and at least the back fuel lines were dry (not sure about the front). I checked the little filter sock on the gas line pickup in the tank and it doesn't look like it has collapsed or anything. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I removed the main fuel line, threw a baggy around it, and tried another 20 second or so crank. This time about a teaspoon of gas came out. That still doesn't seem like much so I'll wait a bit to hear from you guys if this is normal.

Thanks

you should have fuel readily available at the pump intake line as the system is a gravity flow....be sure the gas cap is vented.....

That will probably work but if not and you have a vapor line on the drivers side remove it and blow into it and pressureize the tank a little the fuel will flow up to the pump and the pump will prime and should be ok.
If you dont have a vapor line you can blow in the return line and that should force some gas forward. You'll have to get the return back on quick.

Thanks everyone! Will let you know when it comes to life. Hope to have a chance to get back to it one night this week. If not, definitely next weekend. Need about a month off to catch up on stuff around here.

On a Holley pour the gas down the vent tube in the primary this will put some gas into the front bowl. This will get it running long enough to get the gas flowing from the tank. it is better than raw gas washing down your cylinder walls by pouring straight into the carb. Th

As usual you guys are the master's of the automotive universe. Put some gas in the carb and it started right up. Ran for about 3 seconds and died. Put in a little more gas, it fired right up, then ran like a champ. IT'S ALIVE!! Great to hear since it's been dormant since ... March. YIKES. Thanks again for your help!
