Default Auto transmission problem

I have an auto transmission in a 1973 that originally had a manual transmission. One of the first steps in the procedure for removing an auto transmission is to remove the transmission mounting crossmember. In my car the transmission crossmember is not removable it is welded as was the case with manuals, can I get the auto gearbox out without moving the engine forward. If I take the extension housing off the rear of the housing will this give me enough clearance to drop the transmission. Any hints would be great.

I can't say from experience, but I don't think you can. There is just not that much room to manipulate it around. May be a good time to convert to a removable crossmember.

Yes an auto trans can be removed without pulling the engine. Depending on your exhaust routing, you may have to move the pipes to drop it. If you need the room, you can slide the tranny to the rear, remove the flex plate to give you more clearance to get the tranny out.
