Default Charcoal canister missing

Hi, all,

My 'vette is missing that charcoal filled thingamajig that the gas tank is vented into, I forget what it's called......evaporative emissions canister, or some such.....anyway, I just plain don't have one. The gas tank vent line is still there, but it's blocked off with a rubber cap. I noticed this when I started doing a little digging around because when I take the gas cap off to gas up, a lot of pressure is released. None of my other cars have done this, so I found it a bit odd, and sure enough, I figured out why. Now, my question is, do I really need a new canister for this vent line to go into? I don't want to vent gasoline fumes directly into the atmosphere, especially under the hood, where the slightest little spark could cause it to ignite. Would it be possible to run the vent line into the fuel bowl vent, or something like that? I'm not holding out a lot of hope for anything like that, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to spring for a new cannister, but hey, ya never know till ya ask. Thanks,

Scott

Your easiest solution is to buy a vented gas cap and go on your merry way. But, that depends on how "green" you want to be and how serious the emissions police are in your neck-of-the-woods. Lots of vintage cars have vented gas caps. Yours did not come with one, but finding and replacing the cannister and plumbing on yours would be costly and troublesome. It can be done if necessary (swap meets are the best source for them...at reasonable prices, anyway).

What year is your car? Are you also missing the vapor line from the tank or just the cannister?

What year? (it helps if you fill out your profile). Note that the carb is vented back to the carbon canister as well. W/O the canister you may get vapors coming from the carb too. If it were me, I'd put the canister back on.

It's a 1980, and yes, the hard line that comes from the tank on the driver's side is still there. It has been blocked off with a rubber cap, like the ones ya use to cover up unused ports on a carburator.

I, too, don't have a charcoal canister on my '75, been using a vented locking cap I got at Advance Auto parts for about 6 years....no problems whatsoever. No gas smell in my garage, no pressure when I fill up......

OK, went to an auto parts store (Advance is the one I like to use around here) they didn't have any vented gas caps, so I ordered a canister for 54 bux. So, now I'll be able to vent my gas tank, and the fuel bowl, too. (fuel bowl vent on Quadrajet is blocked with rubber cap right now) They didn't have the bracket that holds it to the frame, tho. Do I need the special bracket, and where is a good place to look for a used one, or can I just use a hose clamp or something?

It is a little sturdier metal part than a hose clamp. It has two bands around it with a metal piece joining them and that piece with a right angle bend. That 'bent' surface is where the bracket is bolted/screwed to the inside-rear of the left/front fender well. The correct bracket would be best, but you could rig up some aluminum strapping that would get the job done as well.

eBay is your only hope for the bracket.

Here's one for a 77.

Not sure about an "80" but my 76 also has a PCV between carb and cannister.
