I'm new to the forum and Corvettes. Lots of good info here for sure. Does anyone recommend a source for quality rebuilt complete rear hubs? I've had my 73 for a few months now after it sat in my neighbors garage for 8 years. Put a new battery, fuel tank, fuel filter, oil and filter, pcv, tires, stereo, speakers and front bumper on it for starters. Cleaned out the fuel system and carb (old holley 350) and she runs great. However, I can hear the rear hub on the left side starting to hum. I can also feel a small amount of play when jacked up on the left side. The right side is tight but I think I'll changed them both. I suspect it's the hubs as my neighbor told me the rear end was rebuilt a year or so prior to going in the garage. He never touched the hubs. Just doesn't feel or sound like rear end gears.
Can you tell me how to check the hub is the problem vs the yoke bearings? I hear a slight growl but hard to tell exactly what and where due to the loud pipes) If I can verify it's the hub bearing/s what is the cost to rebuild mine (most likely and worst case)? I'll do both sides at the same time whatever the problem is. Thanks.
You'll have to get it up off the ground and use a stethoscope on the bearing carrier to confirm where the growling is coming from. You can do it on jacks, but a lift would be safer. Have a friend run it in gear and and put the probe on the bearing carrier and if that's where the problem is it will be pretty apparent.
