With 11.5-1, you probably need it, especially in the summer. My car clattered occasionally at 10.5-1 on 93 octane stuff last summer. I've used a couple different ones and they all seemed to work (stopped the pinging.) Seems like the Chevron one was pretty good stuff.

Just mix in Toluene (114 octane) or Xylene(117 octane) with a tank of gas. You can get a gallon of either from a paint store or Home Depot for about $5.00. 1 gallon per tank would be more than enough probably, and much cheaper than octane boosters that are mostly toluene or xylene anyway.

You can run up to 25-30%, but I'd add an ounce or two ot top end lubricant at levels that high.

Back in the 80's when F1 allowed turbo's, they'd run almost 100% toluene (they nicknamed it 'rocket fuel') and as much as 50psi of boost.

Monty,

Is there any draw backs to using this stuff, how bout with my NOS system. Is there any reason not to use this stuff. I live in California and they just knocked our octane down to 91 :U One gallon of 114 + 9 gallons of the 91 octane = 93.3 octane. :chevy

Toluene and Xylene are already components of gasoline, all you're doing is increasing the ratio to meet your specific needs. I don't know what, if any, the emissions implications are, but neither of them are harmful at all to your engine or any of it's systems.

The only effect it would have with your N2O system is that it would aid in preventing detonation, although it's no cure for a lean condition.

If you read the labels of the over-the-counter octane booster products I believe you'll find most of them contain copious amounts of either Toulene or Zylene. I read an octane booster shootout/analysis article several years ago that suggested that it's a good idea to use a product that also lists manganese as an ingredient. I don't know why that was touted as a good idea. Perhaps the supporting advertiser was the one company that offers a product containing manganese

Another thing is to be aware of is that a product that claims a boost of "8 points" doesn't make a tank of 91 octane gas into 99 octane super fuel when mixed in the proper proportion. Instead it makes a tank of 91 octane gas into a tank of 91.8 octane (theoretical) fuel.

Worth it? That's up to you. I believe I'd follow suit and recommend a blend of premium unleaded pump gas and some Unocal 100 unleaded race gas (or similar) if you really need the boost, which it sounds like you will when the weather gets warm.

Just my opinion...

I believe that Manganese is used as a top end lubricant (valve seats, etc). The problem with running high ratio's of Toluene and/or Xylene is that the lubricant additives that are part of the gasoline package get diluted. Alot of guys add an ounce or two of GM top end lubricant or Marvel Mystery Oil to a tank of gas to help make up the difference.

If I were to run a ratio of 10 to 1 gas to the toluene I would imagine that would not be a problem the lube is still at least 90%

With that mixture 1 gallon to a tank, should I add some upper lube?
Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm running 10-20% Toluene in my ZR-1 because I have been running a lot of nitrous lately. The best place to by it in N.E. Tarrant county is Jones-Blair at the SW corner of loop 820 and Rufe Snow. Ask for a gallon of #20654. They charge $5.51/gal. Home Depot and Loews don't sell it and Sherwin Williams charges a lot more. I'm not adding any lube at those ratios.
