Well, after owning my '72 ragtop for 35 years, the seat foam is breaking down. The yellowed powder appears on the seats and floor so it's time to change the foam. The original vinyl covers are like new, so just the foam will be replaced. Is this something to be attempted at home or best left to a pro upholstery shop? I've always done all of the mechanical stuff myself, but this is getting into an area that I'm definitely not familiar with. Any suggestions or help will be appreciated. Thanks!

well after doing my first set of seats myself....i took the next set to the upholster...
its not a difficult task but will take time and if you don't have strong hand strength you may want to pass on this. dont be surprised if the metal seat frame also needs welding
Hi D,
The powder you're seeing is from the foam strips that are sewn INTO the covers themselves, not from the large shaped foam pieces that form the seat back and bottom.
I talked to several shops about replacing the foam but was discouraged from trying to do it. I bought new covers even though I didn't want to. I did have success installing the new covers myself.
I believe 7T1 posted that he had success relacing the foam strips. Perhaps he'll post his method.
Good Luck!

Alan
