Default 70 door handle?

I have a 70 stingray and have been having problems with my drivers outside door handle. It all started when I locked my door, when I tryed to unlock the door, I couldn't. I unlocked the door from the inside, this has happened a few times and now sometimes even if the door is unlocked the outside handle seems to be catching on something and won't depress all the way. I have taken the door panel off to see what I need to replace. All I can see is that the ouside door handle has a sping on the bottom which isn't connected to anything, Do I need to replace outside door handle or do I have to just hook up spring? The latch seems to be working all right, or is it? Last thing is, do I need to take latch out of my way to get to the outside handle. From what I have tryed is that one nut of the door handle comes down on latch, this is a tight area to get your hands in. I would like any feed back before I go any further, Thanks, Scott

Should look like this. Which spring is not hooked up? If you remove the 2 nuts you see in this pic along with the clip on the link, the handle will come out. This is a 78' with the alarm switch on the door lock.

The spring that is shown in your photo is the one, it just spins around that bolt. Also on my 70 the bolt in the back is right over my latch so I don't have any room to back off the nut.

Take my advice. If you don't have to remove the door handle don't. I spend about 2 hours trying to get that left hand nut on before I gave up. The door handle has been held in with 1 nut fo 3 years now. My hands are far to large to get anywhere near it. What a real PITA.

I don't think you can replace that spring with the door handle in so try to see if perhaps it has slipped off and you can reattach it while still in the door.

Good luck

You are right,it was a PINA! I did get handle out, but had to get the latch out first, that was the real challenge. I'm buying all new parts, not taking any chances since it was so difficult. Had nightmares last night thinking about putting it back together, its going to take some time, but I'll get it, thanks

These handles break all the time. A new one is $40. $10 got me a replacement spring, which I could probably make myself next time. It really is all about trying not to take out the handle...
